    Great video!! I tend to prefer closing to grapple when the opponent parties the thrust high rather than trying to land a rising cut against the arms, though it’ll depend on the opponent.

    • @FedericoMalagutti
      @FedericoMalagutti 2 дні тому

      It also depends on weapon length and how the first action is landed. On average I would say that with shorter weapons is easier to move from first attack to grapple, while with longer is harder and more situational.

      First of all, get a throat guard if you do not already own one. That said this is a very specific problem I never stumbled on before, If the mask is very tight it may be the wrong measure, but if it’s not it may be that it’s a coincidence of a specific mask shape and your specific physiology. I can’t really be of help in this case!

    Hi, so i watched a seminar clip of Martin Fabian and he said when thrusting to the outside line there's a hole, no matter what kind of parry your opponent use, your point will always land in that hole unlike when thrusting to the inside line, you will have to create an angle when your point got set aside. What's your opinion about this ? ua-cam.com/video/911rb1F-HIk/v-deo.html

  • @artifact2454

    How do you deal then with opponents who do land a fast parry riposte? Simply parry and riposte yourself? Also, Recently I've been caught often in this manner. I would attack from donna with either a fleche or lunge, get parried in the crown, riposte coming as if it were to my right opening so I go into crown on right/sinestra and risposte transitions into a sottani targeting my hands at the moment where I've already committed and can't get out. How would you deal with this sort of situation? Cuz I honestly ran out of ideas. Only thing I thought of was sticking my sword to opponents to 'glue' it so that hand shot would be much easier to parry with crossguard, but didn't really test it yet

      @frenchgalloglass5204 3 дні тому

      ''How do you deal then with opponents who do land a fast parry riposte? Simply parry and riposte yourself?'' Yes, I in my opinion if your opponent throws very fast ripostes after parrying your thrust, trying to do a remise is a bad idea (it would often lead to a double). As you said, you should be ready to parry their riposte before throwing your own riposte afterwards. One tip against such opponent would be to not overcommit the initial thrust, but use it like a feint/bait to prompt their riposte, then work from there

      About the situation you explained, the best advice is to avoid attacking in that manner against that opponent, trying out another approach. I bought a Leon Paul Titan Hema mask from my local dealer. They told me that LP changed the design after a year or two based on feedback from the HEMA community. The only design change was that they tempered the mesh to the same hardness level as the FIE Coaches mask. I hit the FIE coaches mask and Titan HEMA mask with the bottom of my fist several times in the store. The Hema mask had much sturdier mesh. The only downside I see to the Titan HEMA mask is that the bib is so stiff that it causes the mask to slide up my face when I look down - because it barely bends.

    So, it's a chess game, where the opponent who can guess the most moves in sequence wins. Brilliant, but scary! And the more physically tired one is, the less sharply one can think. So, 1 v 1 situations, the advice given in the video works, but on the battlefield where soldiers are exhausted and confined by the formations, it becomes a game of overpowering arm-power and numbers. It explains then why the most trained (and thus expensive) pieces of the army (i.e., the Knights), wore a lot of armor and were not thrown to waste during the battle. In other words, since their 1 v 1 skills were nullified by the restricting mechanics of the battle, they had to increase their chance of survival through armor protection and unique tactics.

    • @FedericoMalagutti
      @FedericoMalagutti 5 днів тому

      Good analysis. Now to let you simplify it, imagine that in 1 vs 1 you are an army of one. While in a battle or clash, you are just part of a "technique", because the army is composed by many single entities.

    • @evuilliomenet
      @evuilliomenet 5 днів тому

      @@FedericoMalagutti I have never seen it this way. So, a flanking cavalry charge that crashes into a box of long pikemen and fails as a result is like a hook that is blocked, or an offline strike that is parried, and a flank that falls apart due to panic/fear is like the exhausted body ceasing to function as fast and strong as it could at the beginning of a fight. That explains why training and morale are so important to an army.

    Personally, I really don't like this drill for timing and distance because it fails to take into account a pacient and experienced oponent. I'd rather train more an enphasis on a simple fact: Not because your sword can reach an oponent, dose it mean you can hit an oponent. I then start building from there a methodology of stealing an oponents attention to get to a distance at which I can hit the oponent regardless of weather my he has his guard up. I take this philosophy from Monsieur L'abbat, who illustrates this with a large gathering step and a lunge afterwards, in quick succesion.

    • @FedericoMalagutti
      @FedericoMalagutti 9 днів тому

      This is like jumping to do hard things without going through the basics of the same matter. When you teach something it’s easier to get better at it by dividing the aspects so that the student can focus on them, then you can build up complexity a step at a time as I started doing in the video, but by bit. You simply described another exercise for another objective.

    • @iantheduellist
      @iantheduellist 9 днів тому

      @@FedericoMalagutti So what is the point of the excersise on the video? Just to grasp the reach of your attacks? I want to understand in order to properly implement this in my HEMA class. I struggled with this alot (still do) and would like some pointers as to when implement certain excersises. There's no HEMA club in my area and when I tried the olympic saber club in my city, my technique actually worsened due to the incorrect manner they implement priority in the bouts.

    • @FedericoMalagutti
      @FedericoMalagutti 9 днів тому

      @@iantheduellist reach doesn’t have anything to do with this exercise. In fact I talk about time and rhythm all the time. The student can stay at whatever distance he feels more or less realistic to reach, then the instructor may simply talk and say “too close”. The goal is to understand the rhythm of the various motions, forward and backward, side by side (weapon) and to start the attack in relation to that rhythm. There are times during the rhythm which help the attack land. Such as hitting when the opponent steps forward. That’s what I explain in the video.

      @@iantheduellist Hi, I'm the other guy in the video. When Federico says in the video that the trainee "has to pay attention to the quality of his attacks" it means that: - The line of attack should be very "direct": a slightly angled fendente, in order to maximize the speed - The arms shoud extend as much as possible to maximise the reach - The footwork must be stable and the blade should always start moving before the rest of your body to minimize recovery time and the ability of your opponent to see the attack coming If you don't do these thing correctly you will notice that the instructor will often parry your attacks during the exercise and/ or you will find yourself out of balance.

    I thought the sword feeling heavy in the hand due to age was a myth, an exaggeration to emphasise the idea of getting old and frail. But after it took me a month to recover fully from a bad bug a while back, I picked up my sword, and I could not believe how heavy it felt. That was the moment I started to appreciate fully the idea of conditioning one's body.

    Do you think it's a good idea to do weight training on the same day of HEMA practice?

      I have 5 days of gym and 4/5 of HEMA per week. I do it because I have to but I got into the habit. You have you performance slightly diminished but it works

    I love how in Kingdom Come Deliverance I, you are bad at fighting until you actually learn to fight. And you actually get better with practice. The bad part... the act of training was so convincing during a weekend long gaming experience that I thought my own fencing got better after playing this game (as in timing, not actual moves)... a mistake easily corrected 10 seconds after picking up a sword in real life again. 🤣 Can't wait for the second game! 🥳 I love Czechia (yes, Prague in particular), and it's unfair to ask a Czech studio doing a game emersed in Czech history this, but can you do the same centred on the Italian Wars? I want to fight in Florence and Bologna and more. And none of Assassin's Creed nonsense. I want the KCD combat system for sidesword and spadone while I'm crossing Ponte Vecchio in Florence or storming Palazzo d'Accursio to oust the Bentivogli family from Bologna. I can only dream 😮‍💨, but I really do wish this combat and game style got more popular in gaming. Winters are cold, dark and gloomy, and a perfect time to play these type of games, so give us more.
